When the Union army came to the area, the Confederate army destroyed the tracks to Monroe in order to prevent the Union army from using it. For their part, the Union army burned the railway stations at Tallulah and DeSoto, Louisiana, the town across the Mississippi River from Vicksburg. The construction of this railroad was ultimately disastrous for the future of Milliken’s Bend because the train did not run through the little port town.
